When, in ancient Greece, carob seeds were used as a unit of measurement for the weight of gold, no one could have imagined that, centuries later, the word "karati", which comes from the word "keration" meaning carob in ancient Greek, would still be the official unit of measurement. In addition to this property, carob is described as "the cocoa of the ancient Greeks" and has since been a healthy substitute for chocolate, with 60% fewer calories, no fat and much more fiber (40 g per 100 g).
Today, carob thrives and is available in abundance in Crete, but it travels as a raw material from south to north, mixed with POP currants to create a new premium snack with high nutritional value.
