( Satureja thymbra L.)

Savory from Crete (thrumbi in Greek) has been used since antiquity for taste and therapeutic reasons. Dioscorides, Theophrastus and the Romans Pliny and Virgil refer to it. Its name comes from the ancient Greek city of Thymbra, which was located near ancient Troy.

In Antiquity, Pliny tells us that satyrs were often found in the meadows with the censer, hence the aphrodisiac property that the Romans attributed to it and its Latin name Satureja.

Traditional properties:

Traditionally, savory is used as an infusion to improve the digestive system, it acts against colic, intestinal spasms, bloating and stimulates the appetite. The infusion is also said to act as a tonic, against dizziness and as a diaphoretic, soothes coughs, helps with bronchitis, and much more. It can be used in gargles for the hygiene of the larynx and the mouth. After boiling it, it can be used in the bath, it acts as a relaxant.

Food:

Savory of Crete has a strong flavor reminiscent of thyme and oregano. It is thus used in meat, poultry, fish, game, sausages, salads, marinades, sauces, vegetables, legumes and egg dishes, but it is also ideal for all indigestible dishes thanks to its properties. It can be used in vinegar, raisins and Greek olives. It is an ideal herb to mix with others, especially thyme, and which can accompany dishes with a delicate taste without masking them.

Due to its ability to stimulate the uterus, it is best avoided during pregnancy.
